If one suffers with diabetes, hypertension or obesity, they will be very likely suffering from sleep apnea. This is demonstrated by the cessation of normal breathing during the night followed by a sudden intake of air. Repeated throughout sleeping, it causes tiredness in the morning, not only for the patient but also for the spouse. This lack of quality sleep is detrimental to both. Snoring while sleeping on the back is a major contributor to this condition.

A study of the human body measurements called anthropometry has assisted doctors in diagnosing sleep apnea through the use of sleep labs. Sleep studies are performed here to determine the exact reason for this stoppage of normal breathing while sleeping. After the patient has been analyzed during sleep and found to suffer from this condition, some of the regimens used to treat it are pills, surgery, dental devices or changing the position of lying down.

A mask not being mentioned is none the less utilized as a procedure to aid in handling sleep apnea. It is worn at all times during sleeping or napping. The mask can be of a type that remains in place and covers the nose, just the mouth or both. Successful treatment depends on keeping this positive pressure applied continually. When using a regular pillow for sleeping this can be difficult to maintain.

And then the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure pillow (CPAP pillow) is introduced to solve that issue. It is designed to conform to the shape of the mask and associated tubing with curving and dips and valleys to provide this. Their core is made of polyester or foam and a covering is provided that is quilted to help prevent slippage of equipment and non-flattening of the edges. They are also hypoallergenic and there are pillow covers available for sanitary conditions to be maintained.

Supporting the airway, neck and spine is imperative. This assures that there are no pressure points on the face that can cause discomfort.

While wearing the mask, of whichever design chosen, back sleeping or side sleeping is allowed and CPAP pillows are made to accomplish this for either. Reduction of pressure escapes and lack of proper suction to hold mask in place are provided by these newly designed pillows. They may be dried in the dryer, washed by machine and are thick and yet supple, providing more success in treatment. For traveling, there are mini versions as well.
